Using an FTP program for Windows
There are many FTP programs available for the Windows platform and I have found that Ace-FTP and WS_FTP
both work very well. To connect to a server and transfer files follow the instructions below.
- Go under the Start menu and select programs to locate and launch the FTP program.
- A Sessions Properties window will open and you will need to change the Host name/Address
to the server (I.E. Firstserver.cc) you wish to connect to. You can leave the Host Type
set to Automatic Detect. You will then need to enter your User Name and Password and then
click on OK. Dont forget host name in second tab.
- You will now see a window that is split in half. The window on the left is the hard drive
of the computer that you are using and the right window is the server that you are connected
to.
- To transfer a file locate the file either on your hard drive or the server and use the
arrow buttons located between the two windows to copy the file. You will notice three buttons
below the windows titled ASCII, Binary and Auto. If it is not already selected click on the
Binary button as this will work OK for most files.
- When you are finished click on the Close button and then the Exit button to logoff the
server and leave the program.
Note: Make sure in the second tab you put a valid Host Folder Name,
it will be the name of the folder your site is in on the server, if you login
and see a bunch of folders that are not yours dont worry the server didnt
know what to do and droped you into the public access FTP site, just put
the host folder name in.
